Where the numbers come from

MaxPreps, which is where North Carolina coaches file their scores and stats. The pull walks MaxPreps' own "nearby schools" links out from five seed schools along the coast, keeps the schools inside the corridor, reads each one's current boys varsity season, and then takes the standings and scoring leaderboard for every conference those schools play in. Only pages MaxPreps' robots.txt allows are fetched.

What it cannot show

MaxPreps publishes no per-match player stats for soccer — a box score is just the line score — so a game row is the date, the opponent and the final, and nothing more. Steals and saves live only on the printable team sheet, which robots.txt puts off limits. Jersey numbers appear only where a coach entered them.

How leagues are rated

A league's strength is the median MaxPreps state rank of its teams. MaxPreps ranks every school in the state on one scale regardless of size or public versus private, so a low median means the conference is genuinely deep. The median rather than the average, so one runaway team cannot carry a weak league. A league with fewer than three ranked teams is not rated at all.

How players are rated

A raw scoring lead is worth less in a weak conference. So points are put on a per-game footing, pulled toward the regional average when the sample is small, then multiplied by the player's league factor — the strongest league counts 1.5× the weakest, on a log scale. Four games is the floor to appear on the board.

Freshness
